What is Remote ID?

Remote ID is Part 89's requirement that a drone share who it is and where it is while flying. Here is the rule, the exam traps and practice questions, with the FAA source under each answer.

Part 107, explained · Last reviewed October 25, 2026 against the eCFR and faa.gov. UAV Campus is not affiliated with the FAA.

What is Remote ID for drones under 14 CFR Part 89?

Remote ID is the Part 89 requirement that an unmanned aircraft identify itself and report its position while it flies. After September 16, 2023, no one may operate an unmanned aircraft in U.S. airspace unless the flight meets 89.110 (a standard Remote ID aircraft) or 89.115 (a broadcast module or an FAA-recognized identification area).

The FAA says Remote ID provides data on the location and identification of small unmanned aircraft in the NAS, and gives the FAA, national security agencies and law enforcement airspace awareness.

Part 89 applies to aircraft registered or required to be registered under part 47 or 48, and to foreign civil unmanned aircraft in the United States.
