Part 107, explained · Last reviewed October 25, 2026 against the eCFR and faa.gov. UAV Campus is not affiliated with the FAA.
Which drones and pilots must comply with Remote ID?
Remote ID applies to people operating unmanned aircraft registered or required to be registered under part 47 or 48, and to people operating foreign civil unmanned aircraft in the United States. It does not apply to part 91 operations that are transmitting ADS-B Out under 91.225. The requirement took effect after September 16, 2023.
AC 107-2A adds that a small unmanned aircraft that does not itself need part 48 registration, such as one weighing 0.55 pounds or less, must still meet Remote ID when it is operated under any operating part for which registration is required.

Exam traps
- Part 89 Remote ID applies after September 16, 2023.
- The only exclusion in 89.101(b) is for part 91 operations transmitting ADS-B Out under 91.225.
- Foreign civil unmanned aircraft flown in the United States are covered by 89.101(a)(2).
- The Administrator may authorize operations without Remote ID solely for aeronautical research or to show compliance with regulations.
Try it: practice questions
Similar to the FAA test, not the actual test questions.
Practice question 1
Which of the following is permissible with authorization from the Administrator, if the sole purpose of the mission is aeronautical research.
- A Flying in a prohibited area.
- B Flying without Remote ID.
- C Flying in class B airspace without ADSB-Out.
Show the answer
Answer: B. Flying without Remote ID.14 CFR 89.120 lets the Administrator authorize operations without Remote ID when the operation is solely for aeronautical research or to show compliance with regulations; 89.105 also allows other Administrator authorizations. A drone without Remote ID may also be flown inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (89.115(b)). Research authorization does not open prohibited areas, and Part 107 actually prohibits ADS-B Out transmission unless authorized (107.53).

Practice question 2
You fly under Part 107 with an older drone that has no Remote ID and no broadcast module. Where may you fly it?
- A Anywhere in Class G airspace below 400 feet AGL.
- B Anywhere, as long as it weighs 0.55 lb or less.
- C Only inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area, keeping it within visual line of sight.
Show the answer
Answer: C. Only inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area, keeping it within visual line of sight.14 CFR 89.115(b): a drone without Remote ID equipment may be flown only within a FRIA, with the person at the controls able to see it at all times.

Practice question 3
You fly a 0.5 lb (227 g) drone to take paid real-estate photos. Must it be registered?
- A Only if you fly it in controlled airspace.
- B Yes. Under Part 107 every small UA must be registered, whatever its weight.
- C No. Drones weighing 0.55 lb or less are exempt from registration.
Show the answer
Answer: B. Yes. Under Part 107 every small UA must be registered, whatever its weight.14 CFR 48.15: registration is required unless the aircraft is flown exclusively under the recreational exception (49 U.S.C. 44809) AND weighs 0.55 lb or less. Paid work is not recreational, so weight doesn't matter.

Does a foreign-registered drone need to do anything extra?
Yes. Before flying a foreign registered civil unmanned aircraft with Remote ID in U.S. airspace, the person must submit a notice of identification to the FAA and obtain a confirmation of identification.

Does a light drone flown under Part 107 still need Remote ID?
Per AC 107-2A, yes: one weighing 0.55 pounds or less must comply when operated under any operating part for which registration is required.
